THE LONE STAR CROSS COUNTRY EXPEDITION (LSXC) 2003

Austin Air Sports (AAS) will be sponsoring the 2nd annual LSXC again in Edinburg, TX June 1 - July 31, 2003. Edinburg is just north of McAllen (gateway to Mexico and international airport) and west of South Padre Island (beautiful Texas beaches). Edinburg became a proven site during our expedition last year, offering several personal bests for many pilots as well as a world record - declared goal 273km - set by European paraglider pilot Bruce Goldsmith. The conditions, which are consistantly strong, begin to build early with steady S-SE winds, allowing early starts. The geographical location of Edinburg provides XC routes that are east of the Texas/Mexico border and offer relatively easy retrievals. This particular area of south Texas is user-friendly with cultivated farmland for the first 30-40 miles (making relaunches a possibility). Edinburg also has many local amenities such as great restaurants, grocery stores, library (which has free internet access available), lots of lodging options, several RV parks, and more. Progreso, Mexico, which is less than 30 minutes away, remains a "traditional" border town with excellent restaurants, great shopping, and awesome margaritas (all very inexpensive). The beaches of South Padre Island offer surfing, fishing, beachcombing, wind surfing, kite surfing, parasailing, excellent seafood, and much more. The dunes along the beach also offer some great zaggie soaring and have the potential for dune soaring your para glider as well. Edinburg is a great location to include the family. The airport in Edinburg has a 6,000' paved runway and brand-new, air-conditioned facilities. We will have 2 tugs and 3 payout winches to provide towing services for both hang glider and para glider pilots. Come and attempt a personal best or a world record. All the necessary forms will be available for any distance records that are declared. We encourage anyone wanting to declare a world record to review the necessary requirements at http://www.fai.org/hang_gliding/documents/sc7.asp. Any participating pilot must be an USHGA member (temporary membership forms for international pilots will be available and will be effective upon signing for 90 days). We will have a limited number of drivers available, so we want to encourage pilots to bring their own driver if possible. The registration form is below.
