Lone Star Cross Country (LSXC):
AAS organized and sponsored the Lone Star Cross Country (LSXC) which debuted in Edinburg, Texas during the summer of 2002. The expedition was a success providing many pilots with several personal bests and a world record -declared goal 273km- was set by European paraglider pilot Bruce Goldsmith, Aug. 3, 2002. Josh Cohn set another declared goal record on June 22, 2003 - 285.2km - flying from Edinburg to Carrizo Springs, TX (which is the current record).
The fun town of Pregreso, Mexico is 30 minutes away with a lighted parking lot on the U.S. side, right next to the international bridge. A short walk across the bridge brings you to shops, restaurants, street vendors, and fun bars to choose from it is an inexpensive blast! South Padre is a 34-mile long barrier island at the southernmost tip of Texas and is just over an hour away for great surfing, fishing, beachcombing, wind surfing (named one of the top ten wind surfing spots in the world), excellent seafood, diving, sailing, parasailing, jet skiing, horseback riding, golf, sand-castle building, or just sitting on the beach looking at all the pretty girls and/or good looking guys (whatever your preference might be!). The island has both a gulf side and a bay side, which offers calmer waters for activities such as fishing and windsurfing. The dunes along the beach offer some great RC Zaggie flying as well as the potential to soar a paraglider. So needless to say, when you're not flying there are many, many fun things to do and Edinburg is a great location to include the family in your flying adventures. Edinburg itself is a town of over 50,000 people with restaruants, grocery stores and hotels/motels. McAllen is just south of Edinburg and has an international airport.
Come join us and attempt a personal best. The area offers non-threatening terrain to fly over for the first 40+ miles, with paved roads that offer easy retrieval. The local truck drivers, surrounding counties Sheriff's Departments, and Border Patrol are more than willing to help out when needed. Read about some exciting retrievals and the flying achievements below.
